Back in 2017 Terrestoria found a natural partner in Cascina Montagnola’s Donatella Giannotti—one of the world’s few vintners who produce wines from the Timorasso grape. Native to the hills of Tortona in the southeastern corner of Piedmont, Timorasso once came extremely close to extinction. However, thanks to visionaries like Donatella, with her flagship Morasso, fascinatingly mineral and cellar-worthy white wines are now attributed to this noble variety. Meanwhile other local grapes, including the red Barbera, play an equally prominent role in the Colli Tortonesi DOC denomination. Cascina Montagnola’s monovarietal Rodeo, in particular—from Barbera vines planted in the wake of WWII—is an assured epiphany for anyone skimming over Piedmont’s diverse viticultural landscape by stopping at Nebbiolo-based wines alone.
