In many cases, what’s most remarkable about indigenous wine grapes is that they exist at all — often having beaten the odds of fashion, fungi and phylloxera. This module will focus on three distinct mono-varietal wines which exemplify classic characteristics of autochthonous grapes in their historic places of origin. A guided tasting will present each variety in the context of its unique history, geography and varietal nuances, while offering an approachable primer on respective viticultural and winemaking methods.

While Italy is often regarded as the land of red wine, all 20 regions of the country remarkably produce at least one world-class white wine of time-honored pedigree. This should come as no surprise since Italy boasts the largest number of indigenous grapes on the winemaking planet. In this module, wine enthusiasts will taste what unparalleled variety and deep historical roots bring to viticulture and oenology across the peninsula today. However, the main take-away should be an understanding of why it is fair to say ‘the boot is home to not one, but to many diverse Italies.
