Grapes are natural wanderers. Their phenomenal ability to adapt to diverse environments is made clear by the presence of viticulture across the globe. But how much time must pass before a wine-growing region can claim a specific grape its own? In this lineup of mono-varietal wines from northern and southern Italy, we’ll attempt to define the concept of typicity in wine by tasting native varietals alongside those whose regional identities have developed over time.

Human input is a decisive component of terroir. But are wines made by women necessarily different than those produced by their male counterparts? Let’s address gender identity in wine and decide for ourselves if a female touch is recognizable in this lineup of organically farmed gems from women-led cellars. #tierdommovie

Living up to legacies in world-renowned winemaking regions is harder than one might imagine. While geographic name recognition can give winegrowers in regions such as Piemonte and denominations like Bolgheri a leg-up in terms of visibility, such notoriety can be equally misleading where small-scale artisans of wine are concerned. This module will focus on the creativity of indie winegrowers who honor tradition while occasionally breaking with old ways. #tierdommovie

When to pick and how have an enormous influence on the essence of a wine. Freshness, acidity, alcohol content, tannic structure and residual sugar are all related to the ripening of grapes. How vignerons steer that process in the vineyard and where that leads winemakers in the cellar deserve our attention.

When a wine is produced from one grape variety and a specific parcel, the roles of place, typicity, vintage conditions and winemaking practices come to the fore with unparalleled clarity. Single-vineyard wines offer precision and authenticity but not without added risk in challenging vintages. Nevertheless, expressive individuality is the goal, and ultimate reward, as this stellar lineup of artisan wines will show.

How does one define elegance and beauty when any attempt to do so is ephemeral and subject to changing moods? Fortunately in wine, we can capture fleeting aesthetic experiences through our senses. This special lineup of wines was hand-picked to illustrate that wines of restraint and subtlety are capable of leaving the most indelible of impressions. #tierdommovie

The ancient Greeks, then the Etruscans, followed by the Romans, all recognized the natural vocation of southern Italy for viticulture. Living testimony of this rich heritage is found in each of the wines featured in this module. The notion that continuity of distant human experience is handed down through these wines seems to elevate their enjoyment to a scholarly, if not spiritual, pursuit. And as if that were not enough, the wines are irresistibly delicious too.
