Aglianico has spent decades living in the shadow of Barolo and Brunello — a comparison that flatters it without quite doing it justice. On Mount Vulture, an extinct volcano in the remote interior of Basilicata, it finds one of its most compelling expressions. Giovanna Paternoster represents the fourth generation of a family that has been farming this land for over a century, working three hectares of organic vines at 540 meters in the historic Macarico sub-zone, nestled between two ancient lava flows. The pyroclastic rock and iron-rich clay beneath give the wine a mineral depth that is difficult to source anywhere else. Twelve months in French oak with periodic lees stirring add structure and texture without obscuring what the volcano has to say. Dark, brooding, and built to age — this is Basilicata at its most persuasive.
